The various types of Injury

Injuries are becoming very common nowadays. The various types of injuries are;
Sprains.
Strains or Muscle tears.
Bursitis
Cramps.
Blisters
Fractures.
Contusions.
Concussions.
Abrasions.
Lacerations.
Dislocations.
Myositis ossificans.

Sprains are common injuries occurring in the various major joints in the body due to excessive stretching. They are injury of the ligaments of the joint where they may have undergone mild injury to sever tear. Depending upon the severity, sprains can be treated with medication, physical therapy, physiotherapy or exercise therapy, or even surgery. Common joints where sprains occur are the ankle joint and the wrist joint.

Strain is similar to sprain. The difference being, sprain is injury of the ligament, while strain is an injury of a muscle. Strain is also a result of overstretching. Strain is usually known as pulled muscle or muscle tear. In case of strain, there will be localized pain, stiffness and sometimes discoloration. Depending upon the severity, strains are treated with a combination of medication, exercise therapy, rest and surgery.

Bursitis is a condition of inflammation of bursae which are small sacs of synovial fluid in the body. The condition is associated with pain, swelling, discoloration, and stiffness. The pain may vary from mild to severe type. Bursitis is commonly seen in shoulder, elbow and knee joints.

Cramps are condition of painful shortening or contraction of the muscles in our body. Commonly calf muscle undergo cramps. Cramps are usually caused due to mineral imbalance, dehydration and tiredness.

Blister is a small swelling of fluid pocket usually seen in upper layer of the skin especially in the feet, hands, and face. Blisters contain of clear water like fluid which is called as serum or plasma. In extreme cases blisters can also be filled with blood and pus. Blisters are usually caused due to friction on the surface. Some other causes of blisters include, extremely high temperature, chemicals, and certain diseases.

Fractures is a condition where the bone undergoes a loss in its continuity or breaks. Fracture can be caused due to various reasons like injury, overweight, diseases, calcium loss, etc. Fractures are common in oldage.

Contusion is also known as bruise or hematoma. In a contusion, as a result of injury, blood vessels and capillaries break and get damaged and the blood seeps through to the surrounding structures under the skin, thus giving a characteristic dark discoloration. In contusion, the skin is not torn, but shows a discoloration.

Concussion which means ‘to shake violently’ is a type of traumatic brain injury. Depending upon the severity, it can be a mild injury or severely fatal. Concussion is also referred to as mild traumatic brain injury (MBTI), mild brain injury, minor head trauma, mild head injury (MHI).

Abrasion is a superficial injury characterized by tear in the skin. Abrasions are referred to as grazes or scrapes. Abrasion is caused due to contact of the skin with a rough surface in a rubbing manner. Abrasions are usually mild injuries where the skin which has peeled of heals quickly.

Lacerations are deep skin injuries where the skin are cut, torn or punctured. Laceration is more severe than abrasion where the skin is damaged severely and is usually accompanied with bleeding and slow healing. Lacerations depending upon the cause can become septic and may lead to severe complications.

Dislocation, also referred to as luxation or joint dislocation is a condition where the bones in a joint become displaced and the joint loses its normal alignment. Dislocation is usually caused due to injury of the joints. Dislocation can be complete or partial and partial dislocation is known as subluxation. Dislocation is more common in shoulder joint and knee joint.

Myositis ossificans is a condition of abnormal bone growth within a muscle after injury. In this condition, after the muscle has undergone severe injury with formation of hematoma, calcification or formation of bone material occurs which is known as myositis ossificans. It is usually caused as a result of injury. Diagnosis is usually made by an X-ray.
