What are the natural responses to emotional or psychological trauma?
By Dr Maharaja SivaSubramanian N
There are incidents which may result in emotional or psychological trauma. You may have come across such situations. For your mind and body, they are unfavorable situations which threaten you a lot and also pose a risk of threating your well being and life. As such the human mind decides on its own natural responses which you go through.There are two main response mechanism which happen after an incident resulting in emotional or psychological trauma. They are;
Repression is a response mechanism where you even forget the happening of such an incident. Repression usually occurs as a result of deep traumatic events which result in huge shock where your life may be endangered. As such you develop a mild to severe degree of loss of memory of that incident where you will become ignorant of any such event happening in your life. Repression is more so common in events which are life threatening, especially during childhood and in traumatic events like rape.
Depression is a response mechanism where the trauma may not be as severe as those which may result in repression. Even then, they are traumatic events which may result in emotional responses ranging from sadness to grief. This is usually characterised with emotions like sadness, denial, anger, sorrow, grief, isolation, fear, etc.
Both repression and depression can be mechanisms which may be present for a duration of few days to long years or even the whole lifetime.
Appropriate treatment should be sought for overcoming such conditions. I shall write about some of the treatment procedures in the next blog post.
Be Healthier and Happier. Become Empowered and Enriched.
